Migraines & Headaches

Migraine headaches – Does Chiropractic Care Help?

According to the American Migraine Foundation (AMF) 12% of American suffer from migraines. While medical professionals have yet to determine the exact cause of migraines they do know that this type of headache has a devastating effective on the lives of migraine sufferers. Not only are migraines painful, with severe headache pain often lasting a full 24 hours, and in some cases symptoms lasting 2 or 3 days from start to finish, they are also accompanied by many other symptoms as well. These other symptoms include:

  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Visual disturbances

Migraine sufferers have to understand that in some cases, migraines may suddenly start, continue for years and then suddenly stop, while in other situations these headaches may continue for life often as many times as 15 or more times a month. In either case, finding relief for your migraines can help you live a more comfortable and fulfilling life.

Standard treatment for Migraines usually consist of medication for the Nausea and pain and have proven to be effective for short periods of time, however in many cases, after a few months these medications seem to lose their effectiveness and sufferer find themselves searching for other ways to treat their Migraine Headaches and find relief. That’s when Migraine Headache sufferers pay their first visit to my office, and the first question they ask me is “Will Chiropractic care help my Migraine Headache symptoms and pain?”

The best answer I can give these patients is to cite the results of a 2005 study conducted by Dr. Peter Tuchin. His study involving migraine sufferers whose average migraine history spanned 18 years, showed marked improvement after 2 months of chiropractic care.

22% of participants reported a substantial reduction in their Migraine symptoms (60% of their symptoms reduced). Another 50% of the participants reported a noticeable reduction in both the frequency and severity of Migraine Headaches and accompanying symptoms. This study is great news for those who suffer from migraine headaches and have been unable to find any lasting relief with traditional medicine.

How Chiropractor Care May Help Migraine Sufferers

While Medical science has yet to pinpoint a clear cause of Migraine headaches, research has shown that many migraine sufferers report feeling a tightness in the neck area just prior to the onset of a migraine. Chiropractors can do a spinal manipulation which keeps you spine properly aligned and reduces muscle tension in the neck area. This keeps the blood freely flowing to head area and may reduce the chances of a migraine ever starting.

In addition, chiropractors perform a complete patient history and may even ask you to keep a journal of your migraine headaches and the triggers that often lead to the onset of a migraine. Some triggers of migraines may be:

  • Hormonal headaches caused by a drop in Estrogen levels during menses, pregnancy, or menopause.
  • If your migraine comes on whenever you feel stress at work or at home, then this stress may actually be triggering your migraine.
  • Bright sunlight
  • Sudden or certain types of sound
  • Certain foods.

Along with spinal manipulation your Chiropractor may discuss with you other things you can do to help manage your migraines such as:

  • Dietary changes and avoiding foods that trigger a migraine.
  • Relaxation techniques to help reduce stress for those suffering from stress related migraines
  • Offer advice on posture to help keep your spine better aligned and prevent stress on neck and back muscles and nerves.

Alleviation of Migraine Symptoms

Since many of the symptoms of Migraines are linked directly with the headache pain, migraine sufferers experience alleviation of symptoms other than just those painful headaches. Many sufferers report that their Chiropractor can relieve both headaches and nausea, as well as improve or reduce vision impairments and/or light sensitivity.

Chiropractic Care Can Help With Other Types of Headaches

You don’t have to have a migraine to seek help for a headache. People suffering from various types of headaches find that chiropractic treatment can help. Stress headaches or muscle tension headaches respond well to chiropractic treatments and patients who suffer from these types of headaches often find a great deal relief from chiropractic care. Many patients experience such a reduction in the frequency of their headaches that they feel as though their lives have been given back to them.

Pregnancy Headaches

Some headaches during pregnancy are due to hormonal changes, while other pregnancy headaches may be due simply to a woman’s bodily changes during the pregnancy. Pressure on the spine, and nerves can create frequent headaches which can affect a woman’s enjoyment of her pregnancy. To make matters worse many headache medications can not be taken while a woman is carrying a baby. Therefore, Chiropractic care can not only help to relieve those pregnancy headaches, but also is a safe treatment for pregnant women.

Can Chiropractic Care Help all Migraine and Headache Sufferers?

While Chiropractic care has been proven to help many people who suffer from headaches and migraines, chiropractors don’t have a 100% success rate. While headaches that involve tense muscles and even the misalignment of the spine can be helped by chiropractic care, other types of headaches may not respond to this type of treatment. Headaches that are directly related to hormonal changes, head injuries, or tumors need to be treated by a medical doctors or specialists. In other cases, a combination of treatment between your medical doctor and chiropractor can make the most significant difference to headache sufferers.

Don’t Lose Hope

Just because one treatment for Migraine Headache relief doesn’t work that doesn’t mean that other treatments may not be more effective. The main thing is for migraine sufferers to not give up hope and to take an active role in your own health and seeking treatment for your migraine headache pain, nausea and other symptoms. It may take time, but finding the treatment option that works for you will have positive results not only on your health, but for your entire life as well.
